Crossword Genius

Appreciate ale drunk in spring (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

realise

'appreciate' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'ale drunk in spring' is the wordplay.
'drunk' indicates an anagram.
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'spring' becomes 'rise' (**).
'ale' with letters rearranged gives 'eal'.
'eal' going within 'rise' is 'REALISE'.

(Other definitions for realise that I've seen before include "Twig" , "Turn into cash; come to see" , "Convert assets into cash" , "get cash for property" , "Make concrete" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
