Crossword Genius

Approaches a listener in opposite directions (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nears

'approaches' is the definition.
(I know this)

'a listener in opposite directions' is the wordplay.
'a listener' becomes 'ear' (body part which hears or listens).
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'opposite directions' becomes 'ns' (opposite compass points).
'ear' put within 'ns' is 'NEARS'.

(Other definitions for nears that I've seen before include "Comes closer" , "Draws close" , "Moves towards" , "Uses snare to get closer" , "Saner (anag.)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
