Areas of land: is a smaller quantity further reduced? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

isles

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'areas of land' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'is a smaller quantity further reduced?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'is' is found in the answer.
'quantity' could be 's' (S is an example) and 's' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for isles that I've seen before include "Eyots" , "Archipelago" , "Hebrides, for example" , "Islands" , "The road to these is a wellknown Scottish song" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
