Crossword Genius

Art of piano playing (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tatum

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'art of piano' is the definition.
The definition suggests a singular noun which matches the answer.

'playing' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'playing' could be 'at' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'at' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'tum' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tatum that I've seen before include "Ryan O'Neal's actress daughter" , "Art ______, great jazz pianist" , "Almost blind American jazz pianist Art, d. 1956" , "O'Neal, film actress" , "Art -, US jazz pianist" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
