Crossword Genius

Art work created by two characters in Thessaloniki (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

pieta

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'art work' is the definition.
'pieta' can be an answer for 'work' (I have seen 'Work of art' mean 'pieta' so perhaps 'work' could also mean 'pieta'). I'm not certain of the 'art' bit.

I don't understand the remainder of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pieta that I've seen before include "religious picture?" , "Statue of Mary with the dead Christ" , "Artistic portrayal of the Virgin holding Jesus on her knee" , "mournful image" , "Tape I made of Mary and body of Jesus" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
