Articles from the picnic basket in the meadow (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

buttercup

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'meadow' is the definition.
(I have seen 'the meadow' mean 'buttercup' so perhaps 'meadow' could also mean 'buttercup')

I don't understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for buttercup that I've seen before include "Goldilocks, possibly" , "found in meadow" , "Common yellow flower" , "Rich yellow wild flower" , "Yellow-flowered grassland plant" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
