Crossword Genius

Artist drawn in by coffee shop's flask (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

carafe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flask' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'artist drawn in by coffee shop's' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'artist' could be 'ra' (Royal Academician, member of Royal Academy of Arts) and 'ra' is present in the answer.
'coffee' could be 'cafe' (I have seen 'French coffee' mean 'cafe' so perhaps 'coffee' could also mean 'cafe') and 'cafe' is found within the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for carafe that I've seen before include "Wine, water, jug" , "Water-jar" , "Open-topped glass flask" , "Glass bottle for serving wine at table" , "Serving vessel for water or wine" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
