Crossword Genius

Artist who was a convert? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

turner

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'artist' is the definition.
(painter JMW Turner)

'was a convert?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'convert?' could be 'turn' (synonyms) and 'turn' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'er' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'who' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for turner that I've seen before include "potter" , "Lathe worker; a water-colourist" , "English painter - revolving item?" , "Woodworker and English landscape painter" , "Popular English artist" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
