Crossword Genius

Artist with bit of sculpture in entrance (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ingress

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'entrance' is the definition.
(I know that entrance can be written as ingress)

'artist with bit of sculpture in' is the wordplay.
'artist' becomes 'ingres' (I've seen this before).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'bit of sculpture in' becomes 's' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'ingres'+'s'='INGRESS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ingress that I've seen before include "right of entry" , "Singers provide a means of entry" , "Ribbon-like pasta" , "Admission" , "Means of access" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
