Asked to appear at court? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

summoned

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'asked' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with communicating as well as being past participle verbs.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'appear at court?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'at' could be 'on' (location) and 'on' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'summed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' is the link.

(Other definitions for summoned that I've seen before include "Beckoned to or called to court" , "Ordered to be present" , "Called (to attend)" , "Told to come" , "sent for" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
