Crossword Genius

At home, maybe take time away from flood (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

inundate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flood' is the definition.
(I know that flood can be written as inundate)

'at home maybe take time' is the wordplay.
'at home' becomes 'in' ('I'm in' can mean 'I'm at home').
'maybe' becomes 'un' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'take' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'time' becomes 'date' (date is a kind of time).
'in'+'un'+'date'='INUNDATE'

'away from' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for inundate that I've seen before include "Flood, cover with water" , "Overwhelm with things to be done" , "Submerge or cover in water" , "be overwhelming" , "Flood, overwhelm" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
