Attractive scabbards for old blade (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cuttoe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'old blade' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I cannot tell whether it can be defined by this definition.

'attractive scabbards for' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is found within the answer.
'attractive' could be 'cute' (similar in meaning) and 'cute' is found within the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for cuttoe that I've seen is " Large cutter".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
