Crossword Genius

Awkward layabout turned up - one he's looking after (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bolshie

'awkward' is the definition.
(bolshie can mean awkward or stubborn)

'layabout turned up one he's looking after' is the wordplay.
'layabout' becomes 'slob' (both can mean a lazy person).
'turned up' says the letters should be written backwards.
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'looking after' is an insertion indicator (inserted letters are guarded or looked after).
'slob' written backwards gives 'bols'.
'i' going within 'he' is 'hie'.
'bols'+'hie'='BOLSHIE'

(Other definitions for bolshie that I've seen before include "Uncooperative" , "Stroppy revolutionary" , "awkward" , "Obstinate" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
