Crossword Genius

Bamboo grove from the Orient bordering muck (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

goo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'muck' is the definition.
(synonyms)

'bamboo grove from the orient bordering' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'go' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for goo that I've seen before include "mud, for example" , "Sticky substance (colloq.)" , "Sticky and slimy stuff" , "Sticky or slimy substance" , "Substance that's viscous" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
