Crossword Genius

Band controller for a current transmitter (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

conductor

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a current transmitter' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'band controller for' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'band' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found within the answer.
'for' could be 'to' (eg both can mean 'in the opinion of') and 'to' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for conductor that I've seen before include "Leader of a group of musicians" , "See 6" , "leader of the orchestra" , "Director of an orchestra" , "Director - band leader" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
