I believe the answer is:

low tide

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'shore' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'base edit returned with water has left' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'base' could be 'low' (synonyms) and 'low' is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'edit' is 'tide' which is within the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for low tide that I've seen before include "Farthest ebb of the waves" , "Condition of sea at its least high level" , "when recession at its most acute?" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
