Crossword Genius

Basic article in magazine, say (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

staple

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This could be a double definition.

'basic' is the first definition.
(I know that basic can be written as staple)

'article in magazine say' is the second definition.
'staple' can be an answer for 'article' (thesaurus). I'm not sure about the 'in magazine say' bit.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for staple that I've seen before include "Basic commodity and paper fastener" , "Fasten with short U-shaped bits of wire" , "Basic commodity for which demand is constant" , "essential" , "Fastening wire" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
