Be in the position to take notice? (3,2)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sit up

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'take notice?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'be in the position' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'be' could be 'sit' (sitting is a kind of being) and 'sit' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'up' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sit up that I've seen before include "postpone retirement" , "may aid fitness" , "Stay downstairs late" , "Means to deal with corporation, maybe" , "physical exercise" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
