Crossword Genius

Beams and walks in a pompous way (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

struts

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'beams' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'walks in a pompous way' is the second definition.
'struts' can be an answer for 'walks' (strut is a kind of walk). I'm not sure about the 'in a pompous way' bit.

'and' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for struts that I've seen before include "Walks proudly like farmyard rooster" , "Walks proudly with support braces" , "parades with conscious pride" , "Walks in pompous self-satisfied way" , "Walks proudly like peacock" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
