Beaten, having finished on the double (4,4)
I believe the answer is:
done over
'beaten' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I cannot understand how they can define each other.
'finished on the double' is the wordplay.
'finished' becomes 'done' (both can mean completed).
'on the double' becomes 'over' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'done'+'over'='DONE OVER'
'having' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for done over that I've seen before include "beaten up" , "mugged" .)
