Bedding edge will do for mother, they say (9)

I believe the answer is:
matricide
'bedding edge' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how they can define each other.
'mother they say' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'mother' could be 'ma' (ma can mean mother) and 'ma' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'will do for' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for matricide that I've seen before include "Murderer" , "Diametric killing of a mother" , "Murder of one's mother" , "Killer" , "The killing of one's mother" .)
