Crossword Genius

Behaviour of fourth character less generous, we hear (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

demeanour

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'behaviour' is the definition.
(I know that behaviour can be written as demeanour)

'of fourth character less generous we hear' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is present in the answer.
'character' could be 'nu' (nu is a kind of letter of the alphabet) and 'nu' is found in the leftover letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for demeanour that I've seen before include "Appearance and attitude" , "Behaviour" , "Enamoured of the way a person behaves" , "Outward bearing" , "Look" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
