Being free to set out, perhaps, walk (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stride

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'walk' is the definition.
(stride can mean to walk around)

'being free to set out' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'free' could be 'rid' (to be free of something is to be rid of it) and 'rid' is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'set' is 'ste' which is present in the left over letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'perhaps' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stride that I've seen before include "Long pace" , "Long decisive step" , "Take long paces" , "Take long steps" , "Extended footstep" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
