hard up

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'being short of money' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'it can be difficult to get out of bed' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'difficult' could be 'hard' (synonyms) and 'hard' is present in the answer.
'out of bed' could be 'up' (synonyms) and 'up' is found within the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hard up that I've seen before include "Poor" , "It's not easy to be in straitened circumstances" , "Having little money, almost skint" , "'In great need (4,2)'" , "boracic" .)
