Crossword Genius

Best item on dinner table at Christmas? A sort of biscuit (5,7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cream cracker

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'biscuit' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'best item on dinner table' is the wordplay.
'best' becomes 'cream' (as in 'the cream of the crop').
'item on dinner table' becomes 'cracker' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'cream'+'cracker'='CREAM CRACKER'

'at christmas? a sort of' is the link.
This may not be correct. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for cream cracker that I've seen is " Biscuit".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
