Better way into the wood (5)
I believe the answer is:
finer
'better' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'way into the wood' is the wordplay.
'way' becomes 'ne' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'into' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'the wood' becomes 'fir' (fir is a kind of wood).
'ne' put inside 'fir' is 'FINER'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for finer that I've seen before include "Better quality" , "Better; more slender" , "Of higher quality" , "More gossamer or splendid" , "More thin, excellent" .)
