Crossword Genius

Bishop walking and picking fruit (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

brambling

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bishop' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'walking and picking fruit' is the wordplay.
'walking' becomes 'ambling' (ambling is a kind of walking).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'picking fruit' becomes 'br' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'ambling' put after 'br' is 'BRAMBLING'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for brambling that I've seen before include "berries" , "Type of finch" , "bird" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
