Crossword Genius

Block playwright meeting queen (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

barrier

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'block' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'playwright meeting queen' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'playwright' could be 'barrie' (I've seen this before) and 'barrie' is found within the answer.
'queen' could be 'r' (abbreviation for regina, e.g. in ER ) and 'r' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for barrier that I've seen before include "bar" , "Thing preventing passage or access" , "Impediment" , "'Blockade, fence (7)'" , "it's soundly broken!" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
