I believe the answer is:

moby-dick

'book' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'second that richard wrote' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'second' could be 'mo' (both are short periods of time) and 'mo' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Another definition for moby-dick that I've seen is " Book by Herman Melville".)
