Crossword Genius

Boring way to transfer funds over, but one draws from it (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

scabbard

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'boring way' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'transfer funds over but one draws from it' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'but' could be 'bar' (both can mean 'excluding' or 'except') and 'bar' is found within the answer.
'one' could be 'a' (a thing is one thing) and 'a' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for scabbard that I've seen before include "It keeps food off clothes" , "that carries a sword" , "Something to stick the knife into" , "foil container?" , "Sheath for sword or dagger" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
