Crossword Genius

Bottle shown by male driver? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

carboy

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bottle' is the definition.
(carboy is a kind of bottle)

'male driver?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'male' could be 'boy' (boy is a kind of male) and 'boy' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'car' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'shown by' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for carboy that I've seen before include "Large bottle in a protective container - by Cora (anag)" , "Large bottle for holding corrosive liquids" , "Large bottle for acids" , "Acid container of young automobile attendant?" , "a lot of bottle?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
