Bounder’s place over in North America (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nyala

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bounder's' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'place over in north america' is the wordplay.
'place' becomes 'lay' (laying is a kind of placing).
'over' says the letters should be written backwards.
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'north america' becomes 'na'.
'lay' backwards is 'yal'.
'yal' going inside 'na' is 'NYALA'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nyala that I've seen before include "wild animal" , "crested antelope" , "Spiral-horned antelope" , "beast" , "African animal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
