Crossword Genius

Breaking rules, given one point by FA (11)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

naughtiness

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fa' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'breaking rules given one point' is the wordplay.
'breaking rules given' becomes 'naught' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'one' becomes 'i' (Roman numeral).
'point' becomes 'ness' (ness can mean a geographical point).
'naught'+'i'+'ness'='NAUGHTINESS'

'by' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for naughtiness that I've seen before include "Bad behaviour (of a child)" , "Mischief" .)
