Crossword Genius

Brendan and his dog? (5,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

irish setter

This clue could be a double definition.

'brendan and his' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'dog?' is the second definition.
(Irish setter is an example)

(Other definitions for irish setter that I've seen before include "Breed of dog" , "Dog with dark red coat" , "Dog from the Emerald Isle" , "best friend" , "Kind of dog" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
