Bring round the nutty English cheese (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

edam

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cheese' is the definition.
(I know that Edam is a type of cheese)

'bring round the nutty english' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'english' could be 'e' (abbreviation) and 'e' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'dam' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for edam that I've seen before include "milk product" , "something to have with crackers" , "something from the deli" , "Made (anag) - Dutch cheese" , "Sphere of Dutch cheese" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
