Broke in thus having left opening (9)
I believe the answer is:
insolvent
'broke' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'having left opening' is the wordplay.
'having' becomes 'inso' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'left' becomes 'l' (common abbreviation).
'opening' becomes 'vent' (vent is a kind of opening).
'inso'+'l'+'vent'='INSOLVENT'
'in thus' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for insolvent that I've seen before include "gone to the wall" , "Broke" , "without the means to pay" , "strapped for cash" , "Snivel not, although you are bankrupt!" .)
