Built-up area wrongly shown surrounded with rubbish (8)
I believe the answer is:
township
'built-up area' is the definition.
'township' can be an answer for 'area' (I have seen 'urban area' mean 'township' so perhaps 'area' could also mean 'township'). I'm unsure of the 'built-up' bit.
'wrongly shown surrounded with rubbish' is the wordplay.
'wrongly' indicates anagramming the letters (I've seen this in other clues).
'surrounded with' is an insertion indicator.
'rubbish' becomes 'tip' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'shown' anagrammed gives 'ownsh'.
'ownsh' inserted within 'tip' is 'TOWNSHIP'.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for township that I've seen before include "Urban area for non-whites in South Africa under apartheid" , "Old manor" , "In South Africa during apartheid, an urban area assigned to black nationals" , "Settlement" , "farm in Scotland (shared with other tenants)" .)
