Burns with a hiss that comes to one's ears (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sears

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'burns' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'hiss that comes to one's ears' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'ears' is 'sear' which is located in the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'with a' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sears that I've seen before include "Makes very hot and dry" , "Scorches or burns the surface of" , "Superficially burns" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
