Crossword Genius

Bush ranger skinned and eaten by Lernaean monster (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hydrangea

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'bush' is the definition.
(I know that hydrangea is a type of bush)

'ranger skinned and eaten by lernaean monster' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is found in the answer.
'monster' could be 'hydra' (Hydra is an example) and 'hydra' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hydrangea that I've seen before include "This flower is strangely a hay danger" , "Flower you might find in garden hay, oddly" , "Shrub - garden hay (anag)" , "Garden flower - garden hay (anag)" , "Shrub of the saxifrage family -- angry head (anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
