Crossword Genius

Caller from US contrarily set out for another meal (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

relaid

'set out for another meal' is the definition.
(ie relaid a table for another meal)

'caller from us contrarily' is the wordplay.
'caller from us' becomes 'dialer' (US term for a device dialling telephone numbers).
'contrarily' shows that the letters should be reversed in order (letters in the opposite or contrary direction).
'dialer' in reverse letter order is 'RELAID'.

(Another definition for relaid that I've seen is " put back down".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
