Carriage left chaps in debt, with billions lost (10)
I believe the answer is:
deportment
'carriage' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'left chaps in debt with billions lost' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'left' could be 'port' (left side of a ship - opposite of starboard) and 'port' is located in the answer.
'chaps' could be 'men' (chap can mean a man) and 'men' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'det' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for deportment that I've seen before include "carriage" , "Conduct" , "Manners" , "Way of standing or walking" , "Behaviour - bearing" .)
