Crossword Genius

Casino perhaps shown original pointer as host (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

township

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'casino' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'shown original pointer as host' is the wordplay.
'original' indicates anagramming the letters.
'pointer as' becomes 'tip' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'host' is an insertion indicator (inserted letters are hosted or welcomed).
'shown' is an anagram of 'ownsh'.
'ownsh' going into 'tip' is 'TOWNSHIP'.

'perhaps' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for township that I've seen before include "Municipality" , "Settlement" , "Poor suburb (South Africa) - county division (US) - part of parish (England)" , "Small community" , "Urban area for non-whites in South Africa under apartheid" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
