Catches the sound of about ten cheers (8)
I believe the answer is:
heartens
'cheers' is the definition.
(I know this)
'catches the sound of about ten' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is present in the answer.
'sound' could be 'hear' (I have seen 'Perceive sound ' mean 'hear' so perhaps 'sound' could also mean 'hear') and 'hear' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ens' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for heartens that I've seen before include "Encourages in cardiac way" , "Cheers up, gives courage to" , "Cheers, gives hope to" .)
