Crossword Genius

Cease to work on publication's material (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

organdie

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'material' is the definition.
(organdie is a kind of material)

'cease to work on publication's' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'work' could be 'organ' (organ is a kind of work) and 'organ' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'die' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for organdie that I've seen before include "Translucent cotton fabric, usually stiffened" , "I groaned about translucent fabric" , "Badly ignored a fine cotton muslin" , "A stiffened muslin; I groaned (anag.)" , "Fine slightly stiff cotton dress fabric" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
