Celt is more than a breath of fresh air, we hear (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gael

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'celt' is the definition.
(I know that Gael is a type of celt)

'more than a breath of fresh air we hear' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'gel' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'is' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gael that I've seen before include "Celt of Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and the IOM" , "Celtic language speaker" , "Highland Scot" , "Scottish highlander" , "Irish speaker?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
