Champers offered for a great prize? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eyeteeth

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'for a great prize?' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this defines the answer.

'champers' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'champers' could be 'teeth' (teeth bite or champ things) and 'teeth' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'eye' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'offered' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eyeteeth that I've seen before include "Canine bones in upper jaw - visualise them" , "Organs of sight in the mouth?" , "Canine bones in upper jaw, under the optic" , "Canines in upper jaw, under the optics" , "Four pointed structures in the mouth" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
