Crossword Genius

Chance to leave impression following lie about mathematician (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fibonacci

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'mathematician' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'chance to leave impression following lie about' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'following' could be 'f' (used when citing page numbers etc) and 'f' is found within the answer.
'about' could be 'on' (as in a book 'on' a certain topic) and 'on' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fibonacci that I've seen before include "Mathematician giving name to a series" , "Thirteenth century Italian mathematician associated with series one, one, two, three, five, eight etc" , "Italian mathematician who gave name to sequence" , "Maths whiz" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
