Change, and be impatient to be on the way (6)
I believe the answer is:
switch
'change' is the definition.
(switch is a kind of change)
'be impatient to be on the way' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'way' could be 'w' (Compass direction - West) and 'w' is found in the answer.
'be' could be 'sit' (sitting is a kind of being) and 'sit' is located in the leftover letters.
The remaining letters 'ch' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'and' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for switch that I've seen before include "Exchange positions for flexible rod or whip" , "Circuit breaker; change" , "Device for completing or breaking an electrical circuit" , "Shift" , "Change over - whip" .)
