Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'course straight into grass' is the wordplay.
'course straight' becomes 'direct' (associated in meaning. I am not sure about the 'course' bit.).
'into' is an insertion indicator.
'grass' becomes 'reed' (I've seen this before).
'direct' inserted inside 'reed' is 'REDIRECTED'.
