Crossword Genius

Character quick to go out of turn (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

faust

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'character' is the definition.
(Faust is an example)

'quick to go out of turn' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'turn' could be 'u' (a 'U-turn' is a kind of turn) and 'u' is found in the answer.
'quick' could be 'fast' (similar in meaning) and 'fast' is found in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for faust that I've seen before include "He sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for knowledge" , "Goethe's damned soul" , "Literary scholar" , "1 28 [EPIC POEM]" , "Goethe's two-part tragedy" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
